AMD unveils Hammer
AMD yesterday formalized “Hammer”, the eighth-generation architecture that will support the x86-64, extending a 16-32 bit del’x86 own AMD introduced last year.
Why 64 bit? AMD has thought that a 64-bit will be useful for large databases, scientific research and complex calculations to sophisticated projects, while many applications have not and will not require the use of 64-bit extensions. Hence the idea of x86-64, which enables high performance and compatibility on 32-bit code (and therefore widely used already existing) and ability to take advantage of the 64-bit (thanks to new applications that are written by programmers ).

Architecture ‘AMD Hammer
On Chip Architecth was published an interesting preview of the “Hammer” for AMD, which characterize the eighth generation of cpu of the American producer of Sunnyvale.
AMD has chosen to continue the “old” x86 architecture by implementing the ‘x-86-64 “, or a version with a new 64-bit registers (xeax, xebx, etc. ..) but that obviously supports backward in the code x86 16-bit and 32. In addition, AMD has taken steps to design the core K8 introducing numerous innovations, including the “Dual Core”, or the implementation of a dual unit of account that allows you to execute 6 instructions in parallel. The bus communication between CPU and northbridge uses the HyperTransport protocol (HyperTransport can be considered a protocol for communication between electronic components since it does not provide a physical system of fixed communication) and travel at a speed of 800 MHz with a width of 64 bits (ie offers a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 6.4 GBytes / sec).
